Street Repair

Learn which streets the City of Berkeley plans to repair in the next five years. To report a pothole, please submit a service request.

In 2026, the City of Berkeley plans to resurface street segments of Acton St, Addison St, Alcatraz St, Colusa Ave, Dohr St, Francisco St, Grizzly Peak Blvd, Harmon St, Marin Ave, Martin Luther King Jr. Way, Monterey Ave, Northbrae Tunnel, Oregon St, Russell St, Sacramento St, Solano Ave, The Alameda, and Thousand Oaks Blvd. For full details on street repairs for FY 2024-2028, please download the Street Repair Plan List, the Street Repair Plan Map, or reference the interactive map below.

The City’s current 5-year paving plan was adopted by Council through Resolution 71,120-N.S. on November 28, 2023. Decisions about how to prioritize streets for paving are guided by the Street Maintenance and Rehabilitation Policy.

Funding for street rehabilitation comes from a variety of sources including the City's General Fund, State Gas Taxes, Alameda County Measure B & BB Transportation Sales Tax, and local bond measures.

For more information about the current status of Berkeley streets, please refer to the 2022 Pavement Management Plan Update.

TYPES OF STREET REPAIR

Street repair falls into the three categories listed below, depending on the condition of the street.

  • Surface Sealing: Involves sealing cracks, patching potholes, and then covering the existing asphalt with 1 to 2 layers of Surface Seal. Generally takes 4-6 weeks to complete.
  • Asphalt Resurfacing or Overlay: Involves grinding off old asphalt, repairing damage, then placing new layer(s) of asphalt. Generally takes 8-12 weeks to complete, and lasts 8-10 years.
  • Reconstruction: The most intensive type of repair, reconstruction involves excavating the entire street, then placing new rock and asphalt. These projects take the longest to complete, but last 20-25 years.

STREETS ON MORATORIUM

After a street rehabilitation project, the City places a five-year moratorium on planned construction work involving pavement cuts. Download the streets on moratorium list for details about which streets are on moratorium. Contact the City at (510) 981-6400 to confirm information for a specific street.
