Meals and Groceries for Seniors

Access nutritious meals and groceries through Tri-City Cafés at Berkeley Senior Centers, Mercy Brown Bag grocery pick-ups, or Meals on Wheels deliveries.

Tri-City Café

Anyone 60 and older is welcome to join for lunch on weekdays at the North and South Berkeley Senior Centers. Tri-City Café offers meals that are fresh, tasty, locally produced, and planned by a registered dietitian to meet the specific nutritional needs of the older adult population. 

Eligibility guidelines

  • Any person 60 or older
  • The spouse of any person aged 60 or older
  • A person with a disability (under 60) who resides at home with and accompanies an aged 60+ lunch participant

How to register

Come in to either Senior Center and ask one of Senior Center staff to sign up for the lunch program, Tri-City  Café. After filling out a registration for, you're welcome to join a meal that same day.

Cost

If able, we welcome a voluntary contribution of $3.00 per meal. No senior will be refused a meal based on their ability or choice to contribute. Contributions are always voluntary and confidential. For individuals under 60, who do not meet the eligibility requirements, a meal may be available for a $10 fee, after eligible individuals are served.

Schedule

Lunch is available Monday-Friday at one of our two Senior Center locations:

  • South Berkeley Senior Center 
    Schedule: Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays at 11:30 am
  • North Berkeley Senior Center
    Schedule: Wednesdays and Fridays at 11:30am

Mercy Brown Bag

Sign up for Mercy Brown Bag to receive a grocery bag of nutritional food twice a month. 

Eligibility requirements

  • Seniors 60 years old or older
  • Must be a resident of Alameda County
  • Must have a be below monthly income limits listed below. Income includes any wages, retirement, pension, disability, social security, SSI, General Assistance, CAPI, family assistance, etc.
    • Under $2,949.25 for one person
    • Under $4,002.83 for two people
    • Under $5,056.42 for three people
    • Under $6,110.00 for four people
    • For each additional household member, add $1,053.59
  • Only one membership per household

How to register

Contact the Judge Henry Ramsey Jr. South Berkeley Senior Center or the North Berkeley Senior Center. If there are openings, you will need to provide: 

  • A driver's license or state ID card with your birth date and current address
  • All sources of income for all household members: SSI, Social Security, Pension, etc.

Pick-up schedule

Pick up from your Senior Center on the first and third Fridays of each month at between 11am-1pm (except for holidays).

Meals on Wheels

Meals on Wheels is now delivering meals on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays:

  • Tuesday, two frozen meals are delivered 
  • Wednesday, two frozen meals are delivered
  • Friday, three frozen meals area delivered

Meals on Wheels delivers prepared meals to seniors who are unable to leave their home or prepare a meal themselves, due to illness or other health issues.

Eligibility requirements

Homebound seniors (60 years of age or older) unable to prepare a balanced meal themselves or who have no one available to prepare a meal for them are eligible for the Meals on Wheel program.

Cost

We suggest a voluntary contribution of $4.00 per meal, based upon your monthly income, to help us cover the costs of the program.  No eligible senior is refused service due to inability to donate.
