Data on Crime, Calls for Service, Stops, and Use of Force

Download data and analyze demographic trends in calls for service, crime data, police use of force, and stops. View crime data for the City of Berkeley using maps or by reading annual crime reports.

Find information about calls for service to the police as well as stops and use of force. Explore a crime map to see recent incidents in your area. Read the annual crime report to understand overall statistics about crime in Berkeley. Download raw data from our Open Data Portal.

Calls for Service

View data on the calls for service that Berkeley Police respond to. Charts break down calls by type, such as disturbance, security check, or traffic stop. Discover how many calls were related to mental health or homelessness.

The dashboards also show priority levels of calls and the page gives a short summary of how priority is determined. Explore the most common call sources and call types that occur in Berkeley.

For further background and information, download the Berkeley City Auditor’s data analysis from 2021. It contains a detailed breakdown of the calls Berkeley Police respond to, as well as recommendations from the auditor that came out of the analysis.

Crime Map

View a map of recent crime incidents in your area using the crime map.

Use of Force

Explore and download the most recent use-of-force incidents in Berkeley. With maps and dashboards, you can view general trends, as well as adjust ranges for dates, various force levels (from 1 to 4), and breakdowns by race.

Read Berkeley Police’s use-of-force policy, adopted on February 2021, which emphasizes de-escalation and expands reporting requirements to include lower-level uses of force that officers most frequently use.

Stop Data

Find out the trends in Berkeley for police stop data. Stop data show any enforcement actions taken as a result of a stop and stops related to hazardous moving violations and suspicions of criminal activity. See how many stops stem from calls for service from the public.

The stop data dashboard also shows more detail of stops by race and city of residence. You can filter the stop data by date; whether the stop was of a vehicle, bicycle, or pedestrian; if it was based on a call for service; and if it was based on information provided to the police.

Read about Berkeley’s fair and impartial policing practices to learn more about the context of stop data.
